De Soto National Memorial Park Cross

This 60 foot De Soto National Memorial Holy Eucharist Cross was dedicated in 1996 by the then Bishop John J. Nevins, Bishop of The Diocese Of Venice, Florida. The Memorial Cross commemorates all priests, past and present that are serving in Florida and the priests that arrived with the Hernando de Soto expedition party in 1539.

Rising up out of the park's Mangrove swamp this beautiful simple cross is visible for quite some distance from the water. The cross faces the sunrise every morning on one side and the setting sun every evening on the other side.

While the exact location that Hernando de Soto landed in the Tampa Bay area, the De Soto National Memorial Park, located in Manatee County, is recognized by most historians as the most likely location for the landing. The memorial part covers 26 acres, has about 3,000 feet of coastline and approximately eighty percent of the area is a mangrove swamp...
